Introduction and Cultivation of Metasequoia glyptostroboides and Landscape Construction at West Lake, Hangzhou

Abstract: Through literature review and field investigation, the introduction and cultivation history of Metasequoia glyptostroboides at West Lake was systematically reviewed, its landscape construction was analyzed. The results show that the cultivation of M. glyptostroboides in West Lake Scenic Area has continued from 1953 to the present. Spatially, it concentrated along lakeside and mountainous road areas in a ring-like distribution, and has adapted well to three types of habitats: waterfront wetlands, natural mountains, and artificial green spaces. Through measures such as improving growth environments, optimizing community structure, introducing water systems and constructing forest structures, the formation of an aesthetical M. glyptostroboides plant landscape has been achieved. The introduction of M. glyptostroboides has had significant impacts on the natural landscape, ecosystem and cultural traditions of West Lake, representing an inheritance of the traditional plant landscape culture of West Lake and a development of its contemporary plant landscape. These findings can provides references for the management and maintenance of M. glyptostroboides and the overall plant landscape at West Lake, and may also serve as a model for the introduction and cultivation of M. glyptostroboides in lake-wetland environments similar to West Lake.
