Effect of Stemflows from Different Trees in Mixed Forest onChemical Property of the Soil

  • Determinations were conducted on chemical properties of stem-flow from Pinus thunbergii, Liquidambar formosana and Cinnamomum camphora, pH value and organic matter content in soil at mixed forest in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province. The results indicate that pH of stemflows decreased, concentration of chemical element increased, compared with that of the precipitation, leading to lower pH in the soil around stem but limited within one meter away from the stem. The nutrient input by stemflow increased organic matter and mineral content in the soil around. Among tested tree species, P. thunbergii had the lowest pH and the highest element concentration of stemflow, lowest organic matter content in the soil around. The reason was that the litter of P. thunbergii is more difficult to be decomposed than that of the other two tree species.
